Financing

The UN Special Envoy's Office is charged with supporting the financing for key strategies, programs and country efforts to achieve MDGs 4, 5 and 6.

The availability of adequate funding for global health is one of the principle goals of the UN Special Envoy’s Office. In early 2013 the Office estimated that additional financing of approximately US $1.05 billion through 2015 would be required to achieve the targets of MDGs 4 and 5 (child and maternal health, respectively). Working with a coalition of dedicated partners including the United States, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, Canada, UNICEF, the World Bank and others, commitments were announced in September 2013 that would bring available resources close to the necessary levels. The UN Special Envoy’s Office then works with these partners and countries to ensure the coordination to attain maximum benefit from these funds as well as from domestic resources.

In addition we work to ensure that other global funds are adequately capitalized and programmed for activities that affect maternal and child health outcomes, particularly in the highest burden countries.

One of the most important sources of health funding for achievement of MDG 6 is the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. The UN Special Envoy’s Office encourages donors to the Global Fund to provide funding at the highest levels possible to support the prevention and treatment of these diseases and to achieve MDG 6 targets.
